Overhead Stops, Floor Stops, Wall Stops: Stopping a Door Without Wrecking It

A closer controls how a door shuts, not how far it opens. Overhead, floor, wall stops and closer stop arms, and which openings justify which.

A door closer controls how a door shuts. Nothing in it controls how far the door opens. That is a separate job, and when nobody does it, the door swings until something stops it — a wall, a radiator, or the closer arm reaching the end of its travel and tearing out of the door.

Stops are among the cheapest items on a hardware schedule and among the most consequential for the life of everything else on the door.

Overhead stops

Mounted at the head of the door, either concealed in the frame or surface mounted.

An overhead stop arrests the door at the top, where the frame can carry the load into the structure. It is the right answer on any opening that matters, for three reasons.

It leaves the floor clear, which is worth more than it sounds: no trip hazard on an accessible route, nothing to catch a cleaner's machine, nothing to work loose under traffic. It protects the closer, because the door stops before the closer arm reaches the end of its arc — the mechanism that most often destroys a closer. And it cannot be kicked, prised, or removed by anyone standing in front of the door.

Concealed overhead units such as the ABH 1023, 1013, and 1012 sit inside the frame head with only the track showing. They are sized by door width and by whether the door hangs on hinges, offset pivots, or centre pivots — three different size ranges for the same nominal door, so this is a dimension to confirm rather than estimate.

Overhead holders

The same mechanism with a hold-open. The door stops at a set point and stays there until it is pushed past the detent. Useful for loading doors, kitchens, and anywhere staff need both hands.

Several ABH units, including the 1014, are available as either a stop or a holder from the same family, so the decision can be made per opening without changing product line.

Not on a fire door. A rated door must self-close and latch from any position. A mechanical hold-open on a fire door defeats the assembly. The only compliant hold-open on a rated opening is an electromagnetic device tied to the fire alarm that releases when the alarm sounds.

Floor stops

A dome or riser fixed to the floor at the door's swing limit.

Cheap, simple, and effective at the one thing it does. Its problems are all in its location. It is a trip hazard, it obstructs cleaning, it works loose in the floor over time as every impact tries to lever it out, and on an accessible route it may not be acceptable at all.

It also stops the door at floor level, which means the load is applied at the bottom of the leaf — the point furthest from where the door is hung. On a heavy door that is a twisting load the leaf was not designed to absorb repeatedly.

Use it where the swing is not near a wall, the floor is not a circulation route, and budget is genuinely the deciding factor.

Wall stops

A rubber-tipped bumper on the wall behind the door.

The least expensive option and the most conditional. It requires the wall to be exactly where the door needs stopping, and it requires that wall to be able to take repeated impact. A wall stop screwed into plasterboard without a backing plate will pull out and leave a hole; screwed into a stud, it will last for years.

It stops the door at handle height, which is a better load path than a floor stop, but it transfers every impact into the wall finish. Expect a mark, and expect to repair it periodically.

Closer stop arms

A parallel arm closer can be ordered with a stop built into the arm, so the closer limits the swing itself. It removes the need for a separate stop, which is genuinely useful where there is nowhere to fit one — a door opening into open space, or a glass wall.

The trade-off is that every impact now goes into the closer and its mounting rather than into the building. Specify a heavy duty closer such as the 900 Series if you go this way, and use sex nuts through a hollow metal door rather than screws into the skin.

A stop arm is a compromise, not a substitute for an overhead stop on a high-abuse opening.

The economics

A concealed overhead stop costs a multiple of a wall stop. It also prevents the failure that generates the service calls: a door swinging past its limit, taking the closer with it, and needing a new closer, a repaired door face, and a visit. On a corridor door in a school or hospital that sequence repeats on a predictable cycle.

Specify overhead on the openings that get used hard, and use wall stops on the quiet ones. Spreading the same stop across every door in a building is how you either overspend on offices or underspend on corridors.
