
Fire Door Assemblies: What the Label Lets You Change, and What Voids It

The label certifies the whole assembly, not the door leaf. What NFPA 80 lets you change in the field, what voids the rating, and the clearances that fail inspections.
A fire door is not a product. It is an assembly — door, frame, hinges, latching hardware, closer, and any glazing — that was tested together and listed as a unit. The label on the door edge certifies the assembly, not the leaf. Which is why changing one component in the field can void a rating that the other components still meet perfectly.
Look on the hinge edge of the door, usually near the top hinge. There is a second label on the frame, typically on the rabbet behind the hinge. Both must be present and both must be legible.
The label carries the listing agency, the rating in hours or minutes, and often whether the assembly is approved with or without a hose stream test. Ratings run 20 minutes, 45 minutes, 1 hour, 1-1/2 hours, and 3 hours.
Painting over a label voids it. Not figuratively — an inspector who cannot read the label has an unlabelled door, and an unlabelled door in a rated opening fails the inspection. This is one of the most common findings in a fire door survey and one of the easiest to avoid: mask the labels before the painters arrive.
Self-close from any position. A closer or spring hinge must shut the door from any angle it can be opened to, unaided.
Latch positively. The latch must engage the strike every time. A door resting closed but unlatched will be pushed open by the pressure a fire generates. This is why fire exit hardware cannot have mechanical dogging and why a closer on a fire door must never be turned down to the point where the door stops latching.
Every other rule follows from these two.
Job-site preparation is permitted within limits set by NFPA 80:

A sagging door opens the gap at the top corner and closes it at the latch edge, so a clearance failure and a latching failure usually arrive together. The underlying cause is normally the hinges — which is the argument for ball bearing hinges such as the H4545 Series, or continuous hinges on the hardest-worked rated openings.
NFPA 80 requires fire door assemblies to be inspected and tested at least annually, with written records kept. The inspection checks the label, the clearances, the closing and latching, the hardware, and the absence of field modifications and hold-open devices.
The records matter as much as the inspection. An assembly that passes but has no documentation is difficult to defend after an incident.
In practice, most rated openings fail on the same handful of items: a painted label, a door held open with a wedge, a closer that no longer latches the door, a kickplate fitted too high, a field-cut vision lite, and clearances gone out of tolerance from worn hinges. None of those requires a new door to correct — they require the right listed part and someone to look at the opening.
