The rule that settles most cases: if the door has a closer, it needs ball bearing hinges. Here is why, with the cycle counts behind it.

The difference between a plain bearing and a ball bearing hinge is a set of small steel bearings placed between the knuckles. That one detail decides whether the hinge lasts a few years or a few decades, and there is a single rule that resolves most cases: if the door has a closer, it needs ball bearing hinges.

How each one carries the door

On a plain bearing hinge, the knuckles bear directly against each other. Metal rides on metal, lubricated only by whatever grease was applied at the factory. It is a perfectly sound arrangement for a light door that somebody opens a few times a day.

A ball bearing hinge places a bearing race between each pair of knuckles. The leaves rotate on the bearings rather than grinding against each other, which does three things: it cuts friction so the door swings with less effort, it stops the knuckles wearing oval, and it keeps the door from dropping as that wear accumulates.

Why closers change the answer

A door closer does not just shut the door. It applies constant spring pressure to the hinge line every hour of every day, whether the door is moving or not. Plain bearings wear quickly under that load, the knuckles develop play, the door sags, the latch stops aligning with the strike, and somebody is called out to adjust a door that actually needs new hinges.

Ball bearings absorb that continuous pressure. This is why the rule is worth treating as absolute rather than as guidance: any door with a closer, any exterior door, and any door in a fire-rated assembly gets ball bearing hinges. Where plain bearing is the right choice

Plain bearing hinges are not a lower grade of the same product; they are a different duty level, and specifying ball bearings everywhere wastes money. Plain bearing suits:

  • Interior doors with no closer — offices, storage rooms, closets.
  • Light doors, generally under about 100 pounds.
  • Low-frequency openings: a few dozen cycles a day rather than a few hundred.

The H4545 Series plain bearing hinge meets ANSI A156.1 in .134 gauge steel, which is the same steel as its ball bearing sibling. What you are choosing between is the bearing arrangement, not the material.

How the standard grades them

ANSI/BHMA A156.1 tests hinges by cycle count, and the gap is large:

Grade 3 350,000 Plain bearing

Grade 3 at 350,000 cycles is around 19 years at 50 cycles a day — genuinely adequate for a quiet office door. On a corridor at 400 cycles a day it is under three years.

Bearing count

Hinges come with two or four bearings. Two-bearing hinges suit standard weight applications. Four-bearing hinges spread the load further and belong on heavy doors and high-frequency openings; the Ives 5BB1HW heavy weight series is the typical specification for doors over 200 pounds or wider than 36 inches.

Two details worth getting right

Fire-rated doors need steel. Ball bearing hinges on a rated assembly must be steel, and the type has to match the door listing. Aluminium or brass hinges are not acceptable on a fire door regardless of their bearing arrangement.

Exterior outswing doors need NRP. When the hinge barrel is on the insecure side, add non-removable pins so the door cannot be lifted out of the frame. The BB5 NRP combines both requirements in one part.

The short version
